Understanding your medicare advantage options

Medicare Advantage plans offer those over 65 years of age expanded benefits to fit your unique needs allowing for alternatives to basic Medicare offerings

Understanding what a Medicare advantage plan is

Medicare Advantage plans are generally a bundle option for Medicare parts A & B. Some cases, depending on your specific needs, they can also include Medicare part D/ prescription drug coverages, vision, dental and even hearing coverage. These additional coverages make the Medicare Advantage plans a smarter and more cost effective option than basic Medicare plans.  There is a big difference between Medigap (Medicare Supplement) and Medicare Advantage plans. Medicare Advantage and Medigap do not work together. Medigap provides coverage for out-of-pocket expenses incurred while on basic Medicare such as co-pays, deductibles and co-insurance. Medigap will NOT cover out-of-pocket expenses for Medicare Advantage.

How medicare advantage works

Medicare Advantage plans are provided through private companies which allows those with Part A & B coverages to have their plans managed by 1 company. Medicare Advantage also allows for more options in premiums, co-pays and deductibles that could potentially lower your costs. Medicare Advantage contracts with Medicare and follows all Medicare regulations and rules. Medicare Advantage is reimbursed through the U.S. Government.

Helpful Tip: If your Medicare Advantage plan has prescription drug coverage, and you opt for a separate Part D plan, you will automatically revert back to basic Medicare. However, if your plan does not have prescription drug coverage then you choose whether or not you want that coverage in a separate plan D.
